🌟 James Busby
James Busby received a land grant in the Hunter district after arriving in New South Wales in 1824. He had studied viticulture in France and published an early Australian guide to vine growing and winemaking in 1825. The Busby family’s Kirkton property became part of the Hunter’s early agricultural story, while his own work also included teaching and public service elsewhere. His contribution to viticulture connects the valley with the movement of plants, practical knowledge and wine-growing ambitions during the colonial period.
🌟 Dan Tyrrell
Pokolbin winemaker Dan Tyrrell made his first wine in 1885 at fourteen and his last in 1959. Working at the family’s Ashmans property, he maintained methods learned from his father and supplied wine to other merchants and makers. He distrusted gadgets: when checking fermentation temperature, his method involved putting an arm into the vat. That detail captures a strongly practical approach to the craft. His long working life gives the Hunter Valley a particularly tangible story of skills passed between generations on the same vineyard.
📜 Dorothea Mackellar
Dorothea Mackellar enjoyed visits to family properties in the Hunter Valley as well as near Gunnedah. Those Australian landscapes belonged to a life that also included extensive overseas travel. Feeling homesick in England, she wrote the poem first published in 1908 as Core of My Heart and later known as My Country. Its contrasting landscapes helped make it one of her best-known works. Mackellar also wrote novels, painted and took an interest in public and community life. The Hunter Valley connection is documented visiting of family properties; it should not be enlarged into a local birthplace or an unsupported claim that the poem was written here.
